In general Web
based EHR has a smaller upfront cost as compared to server based EHR. This is
mainly because Web based EHR is rented out on a subscription basis. Web based EHR
has different names such as ASP (application service provider), Saas (Software
as a Service) and Hosted EHR. These terms are used interchangeably. Web based EHR systems are used by medical practices that wish to save on
upfront costs and hardware requirements of a server based system.
Web based EHR system
- Using the Web based EHR system clinical and administrative staff of a practice can easily access the system through their browser or a mobile device such as iPhone, iPad, Android.
- Web based EHR system can be accessed from anywhere at any time.
- Cost of Web based system is usually lower at the start but it continues indefinitely so over a period of time cost gets higher than the client based system.
- There are less hardware requirements for Web based EHR system. Practices only require a browser and an internet connection to get the system running.
- One drawback of Web based EHR system is that it is vulnerable to disruptions such us power outages, internet failure etc. without an internet connection you will not be able to access the EHR system or patient charts.
- No need to worry about backups and data recovery as the vendor will do it for you.
Server Based EHR system
- Your practice will own the software and the licenses and the system will be hosted in your office.
- Costs associated with the server based EHR system is higher initially because of the increased hardware, installation, purchasing costs of software and licenses. Over the long period of time these costs can be less than the Web based EHR system.
- There will be an increase in speed and performance of the system as the server is placed in your office.
- You need to hire your own IT vendor to make sure system is working fine and backs ups and disaster recovery plans are carried out periodically.
How to choose the best option for
your practice?
Selecting which
EHR system is best for your practice depends on the budgetary constraints. You need
to know the pros and cons of both the system and get yourself comfortable with
them. Let’s say if you have a less initial budget than perhaps the Web based
model is good for you. But if speed and performance is your key requirement then
Server based option is the best for you.
